Uber drivers sue the city of London over discriminatory fees
Mar 1, 2019
London's mayor Sadiq Khan announced that the city would start charging a daily fee to those private taxi drivers working for firms like Uber who drive within the Ultra-low emissions zone, but "black cab" drivers would be exempt. The union has complained that 94% of the private taxi drivers in the city are part of ethnic minorities, while "black cab" drivers, who are mostly white, won't have to pay the fee. As a response, a spokesperson from the mayor's office said that congestion and pollution were hurting the city and that the number of vehicles entering the low-emissions zone had risen to 18,000 from only 4,000 in 2003.
