Gay and trans soldiers heavily mistreated during South Korea's military service
Jul 11, 2019
Several gay and trans men that served the mandatory 21 months of military service in South Korea reported having been ruthlessly mistreated during their time spent there. Men between 18 and 35 years old have to serve 21 months in the military since South Korea is technically at war with North Korea. The LGBTQ people are the most affected while inside the troops; many soldiers force gay men to have sexual intercourse as a way of shaming them and often punish them with lowly tasks. Amnesty International has taken upon themselves to inform and convince the Korean government to act on the multiple wrongdoings of the military.
