Honeybees can do basic math with abstract symbols
Feb 8, 2019
New research shows that bees can perform basic math such as addition and subtraction, and other complex problems like understanding the concept of zero. The bees were trained using abstract shapes and colors that represented addition and subtraction operations, with an incorrect and a correct answer on both sides with a hole that the bee could fly into to choose its solution, and they were rewarded with a drop of sugar when they answered correctly. After training them for over 100 trials, the bees stopped making random choices and started finding the solutions to the problems.
