Italian child dies after home circumcision
Mar 25, 2019
A Ghanaian couple in Italy is under investigation after performing a circumcision on their five-month-old child. The baby was taken to a hospital in Bologna but died under cardiac arrest. Around 5,000 circumcisions are performed in Italy; a third is done illegally. This procedure is not carried out by public health facilities in the country. In December last year, a two-year-old boy died after having a circumcision performed in a migrant center. The procedure is often performed in children due to religious or medical reasons. It should only be done by trained practitioners. Other countries in Europe are encouraging the right conditions to perform this surgery.
